Fall protection is required whenever a worker is exposed to a fall risk from a height above a lower level. For construction activities, the common threshold is six feet, so being at seven feet meets that requirement. That means you must have some form of fall protection in place before working at that height—such as a guardrail, a personal fall arrest system (harness and lanyard) attached to a secure anchor, or another approved method. The decision isn’t about whether overhead hazards exist or whether you’re on scaffolding; it’s about the height and the potential severity of a fall. Scaffolding may provide built‑in protection, but you still must ensure the setup meets fall protection rules.
